These are the five bank bonuses I'd point most people to this month, ranked on three things: how much you get, how easy the requirement is, and how fast it pays. Every requirement below comes from the bank's own offer page, and the fine print that trips people up is called out for each one.
I've been doing bank bonuses since 2007. The hard part was never finding them. It's the rules: what counts as a direct deposit, how long the clock runs and what quietly cancels the bonus. That's what this list is about.

#5 SoFi Checking and Savings: up to $400 with direct deposit
- How it works: SoFi adds up every eligible direct deposit that lands within 25 calendar days of your first one. $1,000 to $4,999.99 pays $50. $5,000 or more pays $400.
- The clock starts with your first deposit, not the day you open the account.
- Payout: within 7 business days after you complete the requirements, per SoFi's terms.
- Deadline: the promotion runs through Dec 31, 2027, and SoFi can end it early.
- Fees: SoFi says it charges no account, service or maintenance fees on Checking and Savings.
The catch
- 25 days is about two paychecks. If your take-home pay is under about $2,500 per paycheck, $5,000 in that window is hard. Open shortly before a payday so you don't waste part of the window.
- It's one bonus per SoFi member, and only for members who have never set up direct deposit with SoFi.
- SoFi's definition is strict: payroll, pension or government benefits by ACH from your employer, payroll or benefits provider. It lists bank ACH transfers, person-to-person apps, merchant payouts and tax refunds as not eligible.
- SoFi reports the bonus as miscellaneous income (Form 1099-MISC), not interest.
My take: great if you have a big paycheck you can move for a month. For most beginners, the $50 tier isn't worth a first slot.

#4 Huntington Perks Checking: $400 bonus (21 states)
- Where: only residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Check yours on Huntington's page.
- What you do: open Perks Checking with the promo code from Huntington's offer page by Jan 15, 2027, get $500 or more in qualifying direct deposits within 90 days, and keep the account open at least 90 days.
- Payout: within 14 days after you meet every requirement, including the 90 days open.
- Fee: $10 a month, waived with $1,000 in total monthly deposits or a $5,000 relationship balance.
The catch
- You're not eligible if you have Huntington personal checking now or closed one in the last 12 months. Huntington also says it may limit people to one account-opening incentive per rolling 24 months.
- Real-Time Payments, PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and transfers from another Huntington account don't count as direct deposits.
- Doctor of Credit lists it as a soft pull that checks Early Warning (EWS), not ChexSystems. Some readers there report account locks after linking outside accounts. That's reader experience, not a rule.
My take: $500 in, $400 back is one of the best ratios out there, if you live in one of the 21 states.

#3 Capital One 360 Checking: $250 bonus with no direct deposit
- No paycheck needed: open 360 Checking with promo code DEBIT250, then make 20 qualifying debit card purchases within 75 days.
- Fees: no monthly fee and no minimum balance.
- Prefer to use a paycheck? Capital One also shows code OFFER300 ($300) and code CHECKING250 ($250). Both need two direct deposits of $500 or more within 75 days. You can use only one code per account.
The catch
- The $10 detail: the headline says purchases "of $10 or more", but the definition says "above $10". Make every purchase at least $10.01.
- Only in-person and online debit card purchases count. ATM withdrawals, person-to-person payments and payments made with your account and routing number don't.
- It pays slowly. Capital One reviews your account after day 75 and can take up to 60 more days, so up to 135 days from opening. The account must be open and in good standing when it pays.
- You're not eligible if you've had 360, Simply or Total Control Checking with Capital One on or after Jan 1, 2024.
My take: no fee, no paycheck switch, just normal spending. It's the easiest no-direct-deposit bonus on the list. Set a calendar reminder and be patient.

#2 Chime: $100 bonus for one $200 direct deposit
- What you do: within 45 days of opening, get one qualifying direct deposit of $200 or more, then activate your physical card within 14 calendar days of that deposit.
- Fees and credit: Chime says there's no credit check to open, and Doctor of Credit lists no monthly fee.
- Good to know: Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank. Its banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC.
The catch
- It has to be a single deposit. Chime says smaller deposits don't combine to reach $200.
- It must come from an employer, payroll provider, gig economy payer or government benefits. Bank transfers, PayPal, Cash App, Venmo, mobile checks, cash, tax refunds and instant card payouts don't count.
- Chime's help page describes the $100 for sign-ups through a referral link. Before you open, make sure the page you sign up on shows the offer.
My take: one small paycheck, $100 back, and Doctor of Credit readers report it posting right after card activation. That's the best ratio and the fastest money on this list.

#1 Chase Total Checking: $400 bonus requirements
- What you do: open Total Checking from Chase's offer page (it applies the code), then get direct deposits totaling $1,000 or more within 90 days of offer enrollment.
- Payout: within 15 days after you complete the requirements.
- Deadline: the offer expires Jan 27, 2027.
- Fee: $15 a month, waived with $500+ in qualifying electronic deposits, a $1,500 daily balance, a $5,000 average balance or a linked qualifying checking account. The first two statements are free.
The catch
- Not for existing Chase checking customers, anyone who closed Chase checking in the last 90 days, or anyone who closed one with a negative balance in the last 3 years. It's one checking bonus every two years.
- Chase counts an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits. Checks, Zelle, verification deposits, transfers from another bank or brokerage, tax refunds and wires don't count.
- Doctor of Credit readers report trouble opening online in Hawaii and Alaska. The bonus is reported on Form 1099-INT.
My take: one normal month of pay, $400 back in about two weeks. For a first big-bank bonus, it's about as simple as it gets.

Which bank bonus should you do first?
- Have a paycheck? Start at the top: Chase, then Chime. Most payroll systems let you split one paycheck, so a one-time $200 to Chime and the rest to Chase can cover both.
- No paycheck? Capital One's DEBIT250 is the move. Government benefits like Social Security also count at Chase and Chime.
- Brand new to this? My beginner's guide to your first 3 bonuses walks through the order step by step.
3 rules before you open any bank bonus
- Read the bank's definition of direct deposit. It's in writing, and it differs by bank. Here's my guide to what counts as a direct deposit.
- Don't close early. Most banks require the account to be open when the bonus pays, and closing fast can cost you the next one.
- Set money aside for taxes. Bank bonuses are taxable income, and the IRS says you report interest even if a form never shows up.
About data points: reader reports are individual experiences, not guarantees. Workarounds you'll read about can stop working, and banks can close accounts. A real paycheck is the safe route. For the latest reports, see Doctor of Credit.
